Stock index regains 1,800 level, highest since June 2008

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index on Friday rose above the psychologically-significant 1,800-points for the first time in more than two years.

The KOSPI closed at 1,802.58, up 18.22 percent or 1.02 percent from Thursday.

The last time the KOSPI closed at higher than 1,800 points was June 9, 2008 when the index closed at 1,808.96 points.

Friday’s rally was seen to have been mostly fueled by foreign and institutional investors who went on a buying spree to push up the index to 1,808.18 points during trading.

Eased concerns about the economy also appeared to have contributed to the KOSPI’s rise.

Advancers outnumbered decliners 550 to 269, while the number of issues remained flat.

Trading volume was 335.3 million shares worth 5.5 trillion won, compared with 361.8 million shares worth 6 trillion won in the previous session.

“Market sentiment has been swayed by woes over domestic issues this week, such as the interest rate decision meeting. But such jitters abated,” said Kim Hyoung-ryoul, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities Co. “Small and medium cap stocks that have been weighed down by the industry recession, such as refiners and brokerages, lent support to the key index.”

In the United States, a lower-than-expected jobless figures and strong U.S. trade data assured investors here of the global recovery, analysts said.

South Korean investors have been concerned of a possible double-dip in the global economy amid stagnant economic data, although the local economy has fared better.

Foreign investors switched to net buying after two straight sessions of net selling, adding a net 539.5 billion won worth of local stocks.

Blue chip tech also helped propel the rise, analysts said.

Market heavyweight Samsung Electronics rose 1.32 percent to 766,000 won and chip giant Hynix Semiconductor added 1.72 percent to 20,650 won.

Bank issues also gained ground as relief about the European banking sector boosted sentiment. No. 5 lender Korea Exchange Bank spiked 4 percent to 13,000 won and state-run Industrial Bank of Korea was up 3.96 percent to 14,450 won.

Oil refiners staged a rally on expectations for eased supply glut. Leading refiner SK Energy gained 5.75 percent to 138,000 won and its smaller rival S-Oil jumped 5.7 percent to 68,600 won.

The local currency closed at 1,165.7 won to the greenback, up 1.7 won from Thursday‘s close, on renewed appetite for risk, dealers said.

Seoul Women’s Univ. students to get iPhone 4 for free

출처: http://www.koreaherald.com/national/Detail.jsp?newsMLId=20100910000759

Seoul Women’s University said on Friday it would distribute Apple’s iPhone 4 to all the students and staff members for free in a bid to use the latest smartphone for mobile lectures, library seat reservation at library and other school-related purposes.

"In order to cope with changes in the education sector such as virtual campus, our university decided to provide better scholastic services through iPhone 4,” said a spokesperson of the university. “We expect the satisfaction level in campus to improve with the free distribution of iPhone 4.”

The university is the first high education institute which has adopted the unprecedented move amid heightened public interest about smartphone and its application in various fields.

The move came as Apple launched the long-awaited iPhone 4 for Korean users on Friday. The previous model iPhone 3 sold briskly since its debut in Korea in late December.

Seoul Women’s University students and staff members will be allowed to receive iPhone 4 free of charge on the condition that they agree to maintain the subscription for 30 months with a monthly plan of 45,000 won or higher.

The university plans to sign a deal with KT, an exclusive provider of iPhones in Korea, on technical support and maintenance services.

I started a study group

To be specific, it is just like a wake-up call

it's up to you!

Tedious? What the hell? The Godfather is the best movie ever.

구식의, 옛날의 : old-fashioned, out of date

I don't like you toying with me.

ex) Don’t toy with the cat’s tail!

The heyday of the team is over.

His day is behind him

 I don't pull all-nighters

I sat up the whole night crying

http://www.ted.com

He took the easy way out to win

ex- They think less and take the easy way out.

He tweeted that 그는 ~라고 트위터에 썼어

What's up yall. Just landed in my new home
Thanks to all the fans and Miami organizagtion

who greeted me. The road to history starts now

His Majesty cannot be stopped, at least on Twitter. In just seven hours, NBA superstar LeBron James’ Twitter account has surpassed 150,000 followers, outpacing the growth of other famous figures on Twitter, including Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

This morning, New Orleans Hornets’ point guard Chris Paul tweeted that James had joined Twitter() under the username @KingJames.

Since then, James has been amassing followers, and there have been countless stories and tweets about the arrival of the NBA’s biggest star to the Twitterverse.

James has been the center of the sports universe for the last week due to NBA free agency: any day now, he will decide where he will play next season.

Some even speculated that he joined Twitter just so he could announce his decision through the microblogging network, but his publicist has shot down that possibility.

It took just eight hours for Bill Gates to reach 100,000 followers, but James has already blown past that mark. If his rapid rise on Twitter is any indication, LeBron James could soon become one of Twitter’s most popular users.

CLE:  What's your decision? Are you breaking up on me?

득점력은 3명 모두 needless to say

Welcome to Miami, LeBron, as Heat begin the party
By TIM REYNOLDS, AP Sports Writer

Dwyane Wade(notes) was on the right side of the photo, then realized that wasn’t the optimal spot for the shortest guy in the frame.

So he moved to the middle, LeBron James(notes) on one side, Chris Bosh(notes) on the other.

Picture perfect.

Wearing their new uniforms for 13,000 delirious fans, then displaying them hours later for photographers—and even donning them for the contract-signing ceremony in owner Micky Arison’s office—James, Wade and Bosh got their welcoming celebration in Miami on Friday night, formally becoming teammates and probable favorites to win multiple NBA championships.

Wade is Miami’s star and Bosh’s decision was the one that seemed to pull it all together, but in many respects, the night was all about James. Farewell, Cleveland. Hello, Miami.

“I’ve made the right decision,” the two-time reigning MVP said.

A packed arena of Miami Heat fans, plus another 10,000 or so outside the building, couldn’t have been more thrilled to hear James say those words. His acquisition by the Heat became official Friday, and he, Wade and Bosh arrived together in a spectacle typically reserved for rock concerts and award shows.

Dressed in a white Heat uniform for the first time, James took a look at his new home crowd, folded his arms across his chest after he and his teammates were dropped from the sky on a forklift, and nodded.

The MVP has taken center stage in Miami.

“We know what the fans want,” James said.

In case there was some question, they told him: Yes, a “Beat L.A.” chant broke out in July, call it an opening salvo aimed at the two-time defending champion Lakers.

Great fanfare. Great expectations.

“It’s still surreal, man,” Wade said.

“Me, Chris and ‘Bron. We ready. We want to go to the gym now.”

After their arrival, Bosh pointed to the fans and screamed, while Wade aimed his index fingers at the crowd and James strutted about to the fans’ delight.

They walked down the stairs to a long runway, slapping high-fives with fans, clapping their hands and soaking in the atmosphere.

“We wanted to come here, then LeBron wanted to come,” Bosh said. “Let’s get it done, man. Let’s get this thing going.”

The Heat sent two future first-round and two second-round picks to the Cavaliers for James, while packaging two first-round picks to the Raptors for Bosh.

“We here now,” James said. “And we’re here for a long time.”

Wade, Bosh and James all signed their six-year contracts earlier Friday night, each set to make about $2 million less than the $16.6 million they could have demanded for the coming season.

“All three of these gentlemen up here are going to be here for a long time and they’re going to be here for a long time for us to enjoy, thoroughly enjoy,” Heat president Pat Riley said.

At the rally, which was announced Friday afternoon and people still snatched up all 13,000 available seats in an hour, fans were given posters with James, Wade and Bosh together in Heat uniforms—“Yes. We. Did.” was the slogan in big white letters.

If Riley gets his way, the party will be the first of many for the NBA’s newest star cluster—a grouping everyone, even Wade, is still getting used to.

“When I look around and see No. 6 and No. 1 on the court with me, that’s when it’s going to see real,” Wade said.

James will wear No. 6 in Miami, Bosh No. 1, both having switched their numbers. Wade considered swapping his No. 3 as well.

“Then I realized, three is magical, and now it represents more than just my number,” Wade said. “It represents the three of us making sacrifices as well.”

Wade and Bosh decided Tuesday that they would play together in Miami, releasing that information to the world on Wednesday. With that, it was all up to James, who said he decided Thursday morning—hours before his made-for-TV announcement special that night—that he’d join the Heat and form a power triple.

James touched down Friday morning, took his physical, and then arrived for the party.

Expectations couldn’t be higher, and James, Wade and Bosh all accepted the challenge.

“Bring it on. We’ll accept it,” Wade said. “At the end of the day we know what’s important. And what’s important is winning ballgames and winning championships. So once you do that, winner take all.”

Canseco loses fight against 60-year-old

1007010

 By Steve Cofield

It was another embarrassing fighting exhibition for Jose Canseco. Or was it? Canseco agreed to travel to Arkansas to take on 60-year-old Gary Hogan in a boxing match.

The former major league slugger plodded his way through four rounds and lost a 39-37 decision to Hogan, an associate athletic director at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. "Rock 'em Sock 'em Rumble by the River" went down at Dickey-Stephens Park before the Arkansas Travelers-Midland Rockhounds Triple-A baseball game.

It looks like the snitch that sports fans love to hate showed a little heart.

Frankly, it didn't look like Canseco, 46, was really trying.

Although in the prefight and postfight,

Hogan broke down the fight like it was real.

"He did [throw his heavy artillery at me]," said Hogan.

"I took some shots but the bottom line is,

I'm used to taking shots. I felt good in there.

I wasn't tired, my conditioning was unbelievable.

I thought he got tired there in the third and fourth rounds."

Hogan came in at 191 pounds while Canseco was 240. The fight was put together to benefit Ray Rodgers' boxing gym and GED program in Little Rock.

"It's an exhibition. I had a great time. I've gotta a lot of respect for Gary.

Just coming out here and fighting a guy 15 years his junior, he's got some [guts]."

Canseco was paid for the fight.

How sad... really... Canseco should really call it quits

and realize his best years are behind him...

Are you all serious?! Canseco was toying with him and let him win.

If he had wanted to, he could beat that old man

Definitely an exhibition fight.

ANy true boxing fan knows this is all for show.

DAEA TI looks to global market for train control system

(by KoreaHerald)

DAEA TI Co., Ltd., Korea’s undisputable leader in train control systems, is stepping up its strides into the global market, cashing in on a vastly growing demand for rail transport especially in emerging economies.

The venture firm, established in 1996, specializes in the centralized train control system based on real-time communications technologies. The company virtually monopolized the domestic market with its system used as nation’s major rolling stock.

Global demand for rail transport is sharply increasing as China, Brazil, the U.S. and countries in Asia and Africa are investing in building high-speed railway systems, a viable, environmentally friendly alternative to cars and airplanes.

Korea, which has built one of the world’s safest and most efficient bullet trains, is now selling its technologies to emerging countries.

CTC is an integral part of the advanced rail systems. It is also used to upgrade the conventional train systems thus improving safety and maximizing operation efficiency without the need to build new lines.

Choi Jin-woo, CEO of DAEA TI, poses in front of the company’s train control monitoring system in his office in Bucheon,

“Though other major firms participate in the signal control business, we’re virtually the sole domestic

company that’s wholly specialized in it,” said CEO Choi Jin-woo.

“We have a total solution in terms of controlling train signals,” Choi said. “We provide everything -- design, manufacturing, engineering, installation, training, testing, repair and maintenance. This is hard to find in the existing commercial market.”

In less than 15 years since the foundation, the company’s market share reaches top in the industry, replacing imported equipment with technology of its developing.

Since listed on the KOSDAQ in 2007, the company has also financially grown fast. It entered the top-100 KOSDAQ Premier Index this May.

Being listed on the KOSDAQ helps us to maintain reliability and value as a business,” Choi said. “Especially small and medium size businesses like us need to build up a good reputation so foreign investors don’t have to worry about risks when they consider working with us.”

In 2009, DAEA TI’s total sales were nearly 64.65 billion won ($52.58 million), surging about 48 percent on a year-on-year basis. This year, its sales revenue is expected to increase about 20 percent to 78 billion won.

Constructions of operations control centers for the Busan Subway Line 4, New Bundang Line, Jeolla Line and Busan-Gimhae Light Rail brought the company good sales results, Choi added.

The CEO’s devotion to the train business for 33 years dates back to his school days. After graduating Railroad High School (currently Korea Railroad College) in 1980, Choi worked at the Korean Railroad for six years as an engineer. He was introduced to the centralized train control system there, and learned more about it at Goldstar Industrial Systems Co., Ltd. (later changed to current
LS Industrial Systems) for several years, which now is one of his competitors.

And now is the time for the rail industry to reemerge, he said, as low-carbon green growth has been emphasized worldwide.

It’s never been in the spotlight in 100 years,” Choi said. “It’s called B2G -- Business to Government -- the industry is getting support from all sectors including government, academia and citizens.”

He called on the nation to step up its preparation to better cope with the rail renaissance.

“We need more investment,” he said. “Rail is above any other transportation methods in the long term. It contributes to local economic development by allowing access to the areas and creating jobs, and reduces negative environmental impacts.”

Countries maintaining strong rail industries such as France, Germany and Japan have recognized railways as a cost-efficient transportation method regarding waiting time in traffic jams and environmental impact. As a result, they have pursued high-speed rails, advancing their train manufacturing technologies.

For instance, the German railway system recently introduced a plan to build 15 high-tech trains of the new model
ICE 3 to undertake journeys abroad within Europe, according to Spiegel Online, a popular news outlet in Germany.

China, operating the world’s largest high-speed rail network, has ordered 60 high-speed trains from Siemens, a German engineering giant, according to the company.

A number of Korean rail companies have jumped into some international projects. Earlier this year, Brazil announced open bids for its high-speed train construction. The $20 billion plan aims to build 510 kilometer high-speed railway to connect Rio de Janeiro with Sao Paulo and Campinas, in preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Korean companies including state-run railway operator Korail and Korea Rail Network Authority, high-speed train manufacturer Hyundai Rotem and Hyundai Heavy Industries are bidding for one of the industry’s most lucrative contracts, competing with six other consortiums from China, Japan, Italy, Germany, France and Spain.

DAEA TI is also planning to expand its market overseas to be a strong global competitor in the train signal control industry, Choi added.

The company has already penetrated a few heavy maintenance and remodeling projects with Malaysia.

“Our targets are Southeast Asia and Africa,” he said. “To jump up in the international market, it’s essential to break new ground. But it has to be for the long term, and constant marketing is critical.”

MC Mong under suspicion of dodging military service

A famous Korean singer, MC Mong has been the subject of a hot online debate over allegations that he dodged mandatory military service.

The controversy was stirred after it was reported that the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has been secretly investigating the suspicion surrounding his military exemption.

About seven years ago, MC Mong received an exemption from military service
due to dental problems. But allegations had it that he had removed 10 teeth, mostly molars, to avoid military conscription.

Under law, all able-bodied Korean men aged 20 are to serve in the military for about two years.

“We’ve been working on MC Mong’s case for six months, whether he unlawfully received military service exemption by pulling his normally-functioning teeth out,” a police official was quoted as saying. “We already interrogated the dentist who gave medical treatment to the singer.”

According to news reports, police will soon summon him to dig out the suspicion.

MC Mong’s agency, IS Entertainment Media Group, denied the allegation, vowing to prepare a lawsuit against a local broadcaster which first reported the suspicion.

“Through further investigations, we would clear all doubts surrounding him over military exemption,” the agency said.

태양 - baby I'm sorry 영어 한글 번역
